Amnesty International Nepal (AI Nepal) is organising its 32nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Ghorahi, Dang, on 1 and 2 December 2023.
As it is with every year, the AGM will discuss and approve its annual reports, work plans, budget and some policy documents. The AGM will also be discussing and voting on the proposal on the amendment of the organization’s Statute and by-laws that aim to redefine and reshape the the organisation’s membership and governance structure and processes.
For months prior to the AGM, the leadership of the organisation has worked towards designing a framework that reshapes the movement of Amnesty International in Nepal so that it can become even more impactful in its human rights activism. This year’s annual gathering of Amnesty Nepal’s representative members from across the country in Dang aims to bolster this very framework and direct the movement of AI in Nepal to be more robust, inclusive, diverse, participatory, and democratic.
“The key focus of the 32nd AGM will be to debate, discuss and approve a proposal for the amendment of AI Nepal’s statute and by-laws tabled by the National Board. The proposal put forward by the National Board at the AGM for the restructuring of its membership and governance is in accordance with the the demands and aspirations of the members and supporters in Nepal as well as the global movement’s evolving character that aims to adapt according to the changing needs and challenges of the time to confront and work towards dealing with the newer and more complex human rights issues of the day”, said Nirajan Thapaliya, Director of AI Nepal.
The inaugural session of the AGM will be held on 1 December at the Hotel Mala Inn, Ghorahi, Dang. Minister for Communication and Information Technology Honourable Rekha Sharma will address the inaugural as the Chief guest whilst members of local civil society in Dang, mediapersons, government representatives from Lumbini province, representatives from the local governments, AI Nepal members and supporters will be part of the event.
A humnan rights action will also be held with AI members demanding a complete ceasefire in Gaza, where more than 14,500 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict escalated on 7 October.
The closed-door session of the AGM will be held on 2 December where AI Nepal’s voting delegates will reflect upon the impacts of their actions in the previous year and will set priorities and budget for the year 2024. The closed session will also discuss and endorse the organisation’s accountability reports including the financial report. The proposed amendments to the AI Nepal’s Statute and by-laws will also be discussed and voted for approval.
Amnesty Nepal’s 32nd AGM will be hosting over three hundred participants composed of members from various groups and Youth Networks of AI Nepal, Amnesty Nepal’s Board and Appeal Committee members, former chairs, staff, volunteers, and observers. Other guests in the event will include representatives and chiefs from the local governments in Dang, civil society members, political party representatives, media persons, among others.
