Recommendations related to Covid-19 response submitted to the Law Minister

On 21 September 2021, Amnesty International Nepal, International Commission of Jurists, Advocacy Forum Nepal, JuRI-Nepal and International Network for Nepali Journalists (INNJA) jointly submitted a set of recommendations to the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Gyanendra Bahadur Karki. The recommendations were related to the government’s response to Covid-19, in particular, its obligation in accordance with the constitution and international human rights instruments.

On the occasion, Amnesty International Nepal’s Director Nirajan Thapaliya also handed over a copy of the briefing on COVID-19 to Minster Karki.

The organizations are optimistic with the honorable Minister’s positive gesture toward incorporating the recommendations in the government’s response to Covid-19.

The Minister Karki remarked to the visiting delegates that the government was moving ahead with a plan to vaccinate all Nepalis, and that the goal to vaccinate all was expected to be met by April 2022. He further said, “It is the government’s duty, first and foremost, to protect people’s lives. We are fulfilling that obligation. And then, by making the country stable and maintaining good governance, we need to move forward toward swiftly towards sustainable peace and economic growth. I expect everyone’s support to it.”
