‘Urgency on High Level Conference of Stakeholder’

Civil Society’s Same Voice on Nepali Migrant Workers

Nepali civil society and other non-governmental organizations working for safe migration- have raised serious concern about the poor condition of Nepali migrant workers who are working abroad. They said that there should be a high level conference of all stakeholders to make a clear roadmap towards protecting migrants.

On a program on 3rd of May, 2013  jointly organized by Labor Group-8, Kathmandu affiliated to Amnesty International Nepal and Centre for Labor and Social Studies (CLASS) – Nepal , speakers said that all should sit together to find out the solutions of problem faced by  migrant workers. Chief Guest of the program and member of National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) Gauri Pradhan said migration  is a world’s phenomena and migrant workers should treated human rights friendly way. Likewise, representative of Foreign Employment Promotion Board Tika Bhandari has said that Government is aware about the problem of migrant workers.

Secretary General of General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) Umesh Upadhyaya urged all political parties to urges political parties to incorporate safe migration policies in their manifesto for the coming general election.

Addressing the functions Tresurer of AI Nepal Pratap Poudel said Political party should recognize the contribution of migrant workers in Nepali economy. Former advisor of AI Nepal Lokesh Dhakal added that Government should address the problems faced by migrant workers keeping in mind the far sighted policy.

Likeswise, Chairperson of Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) Laxman Bahadur Basnet said that nation is getting benefit from migrant workers but the political leaders are ignoring the truth. Chairperson of Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) Subodh Pyakurel added- Government should ensure the voting rights of migrant workers. Similarly, Chairperson of Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) Bal Bahadur Tamang also shed light the brighter aspects of recruitment agencies.

Human right activist Dr. Gopal Krishna Shiwakoti made presentation about the voting rights of migrant workers. On the occasion, Mahendra Pandey Chairperson of Pravasi Nepali Coordination Committee (PNCC) and Devendra Bhattarai, Journalist of Kantipur Daily presented their working papers. Herabha Dev Bhattarai, Convenor of AI Nepal Group-8, Kathmandu shed light the objectives of the program.
