Celebration of AI at 53

Speakers at a talk program organised by Amnesty International Nepal demanded truth, reparation and justice in the cases of human rights abuses during armed conflict in Nepal. They called on the government to ensure justice for victims by ending existing impunity.
The programe with topic ‘Ending the impunity is most important for the upliftment of human rights culture’ was organised on 28 May 2014 in Kathmandu, on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of Amnesty International.
Addressing the function, member of parliament and leader of ruling Nepali Congress Party Arjun Narsingh KC said that his party is in favour of delivering justice for victims but he explained it was difficult to maintain international standards due to the need to reach consensus within various political parties. He also congratulated Amnesty International for its continuous contribution for the protection of human rights globally.
Similarly, prominent human rights activist Krishna Pahadi said that Amnesty International has played an important role in Nepal for protection of human rights and its democratic movement.
Leader of civil society Dr. Sundar Mani Dixit said that people have been fighting for justice for long but political leaders are ignoring their aspirations. He also suggested to organisations like AI to evaluate their output.
On the occasion, Advisor of AI Nepal Krishna Kandel expressed deep concern about the existing impunity in the country. Similarly, Vice-Chairperson of Human Rights and Peace Society Gangadhar Adhikari highlighted the importance of AI movement on Nepal context.
Vice-Chairperson of AI Nepal, Surya Bahadur Adhikari and Treasurer Pratap Poudel spoke about ongoing campaigns of AI Nepal. The programme was chaired by Chairperson Shambhu Thakur.
Amnesty International, the largest human rights organisation in the world, celebrated its 53rd anniversary worldwide on and around 28th of May.
