Around hundred people participated in a rally organised by Amnesty Nepal to condemn the brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrations in India on Friday, 20 December.
Participants marched from Ghantaghar to the Indian Embassy in Lainchaur, where they chanted slogans like “Protect Freedom of Speech,” “Make Universities Safe Again”, and “End Police Brutality.” Since last week India has been gripped by widespread demonstrations which erupted in response to the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Protestors have been met with a show of force.
“Right to peaceful protest and freedom of opinion, expression and assembly is a cornerstone of a rights respecting society and a right enshrined in the Indian Constitution,” said Nirajan Thapaliya, Amnesty Nepal’s Director. “It is very disheartening to see the way the Indian authorities are ruthlessly cracking down on protesters exercising their right to dissent.”
