Thailand: Respect Human Rights Obligations

Demonstration at Thai Embassy in Kathmandu

2 June, 2014

Amnesty International (AI) Nepal held a demonstration in front of the Thai Embassy in Kathmandu on 2 June urging the Thai authorities to respect and protect human rights. More than three dozen AI members attended the demonstration.

A three-member delegation of Amnesty Nepal including Vice-chairperson Surya Bahadur Adhikari, Director Rameshwar Nepal and Officer Indira Kharel then met with the Deputy Chief at the Embassy, Ms. Jiraporn Sudanich and handed over a memorandum calling on the government of Thailand to stop violating human rights including freedom of peaceful demonstration, assembly and freedom of expression. At the meeting Director Nepal expressed concerns about the human rights situation in Thailand on behalf of Amnesty International.

In response, the Deputy Chief of the Mission said the Thai government is too dedicated to protecting democracy and they will restore the freedoms as soon as the favorable situation comes.
