Amnesty International Nepal (Amnesty Nepal) is organizing its 30th General Meeting (GM) in Dhulikhel Metropolitan City, Kavre on 1 and 2 April 2022. The GM is scheduled to discuss and approve its annual reports, work plans, budget and some policy documents of the organization. The GM will also elect a new leadership in its executive board and appeals committee for a term of two years.
Over 300 participants including 254 voting delegates from Amnesty Nepal’s groups, youth networks and the constituency of supporter members across the country and its Board and Appeal Committee officials, staff, volunteers, observers, and delegates from the international movement will attend this year’s GM.
Amnesty Nepal’s 30th General Meeting is unlike any other GMs held in the past as this GM is seeing a significant increase in the number of delegates with voting power following a sea change in the organization’s governance through a statutory amendment made in the extraordinary general meeting held in September 2021. The inclusion and participation of youth members and individual members of the organization in the GM is expected not only to further liberalize and democratize the governance of Amnesty Nepal but also to chart a clear, robust and focused human rights direction in the days to come.
“The inaugural event of the GM will take place on 1 April at 1:00 pm in the conference hall of Dhulikhel Municipality, Dhulikhel,” said Nirajan Thapaliya, Director of Amnesty International Nepal. “The inauguration will be followed by a closed-door session wherein the Amnesty Nepal delegates will reflect upon the impacts of their actions in the previous year and will set priorities including the budget for the year 2022. The closed session will also discuss and endorse the organization’s financial report as well as some human rights resolutions.”
At 5.30 pm, following the closed session, a human rights action will take place as part of Amnesty Nepal’s ongoing campaign on preventing deaths in custodies. For this, the members of Amnesty Nepal’s Kathmandu University Youth Network based in Dhulikhel will perform a drama showcasing how deaths happen during abusive investigatory practices in Nepal with almost no accountability in such cases. Amnesty Nepal is calling the Government of Nepal to take urgent and concerted actions to prevent custodial deaths, including through an independent, fair, and impartial investigations.
The elections for the new leadership roles are scheduled to take place on 2 April through a democratic process.
