Amnesty Nepal concludes 29th General Meeting

Amnesty International Nepal convened the 29th General Meeting (Extraordinary General Meeting) on 3 to 5 September 2021.

A total of 90 participants that included 72 voting delegates from AI Nepal affiliated eligible groups, members of the National Board and Appeal Committee, former chairs, National secretariat staff, and international guests joined the meeting virtually via Zoom while about 135 registered observers from AI Nepal affiliated groups, Youth Networks, supporter members and Groups-in-Formations attended the meeting via closed Facebook Group.    

The Meeting was inaugurated by AI Nepal Chair Bikram Dhukuchhu lighting the candle which is also the emblem of Amnesty International. Mr Dhukuchhu welcomed all the delegates and participants and remarked that the meeting was a historic one as it was going to amend the organization’s constitution to embrace far-reaching changes.

AI Nepal founder Nutan Thapaliya’s message was read out to the participants of the General Meeting. In his message, Thapaliya urges to use “right reason” and contribute towards universal brotherhood and peace by adhering to the values and principles of human rights as enshrined in the UN’s Universal Declaration of human rights. 

Speaking at the inauguration, International Board Member Dr. Anjhula Mya Singh Bais congratulated AI Nepal for coming to the stage of making historic changes to the organization’s governance structure and election systems including by ensuring the equal participation of young members at all levels of the organisational processes.

Ruth Breddal, member of the AI’s Global Assembly wished the best to AI Nepal in its attempt towards institutionalizing important groundbreaking milestones for the organisation’s future.

AI Nepal’s former Chairs Rajan Kuikel, Surya Bahadur Adhikari, Dhruba Karki, Pradeep Pokhrel and Charan Prasai had also put their remarks on the opening event encouraging delegates to play an active role during the EGM by supporting the proposals as tabled by the National Board for the change of the organization.

The EGM endorsed the financial audit of the fiscal year 2076/77 and appointed the auditor to undertake external auditing of the fiscal year 2077/078. Likewise, the EGM also passed the resolutions proposed by the National Board on the organization’s Statute and By-laws amendments.
