आफूलाई सही लागेको विषयमा आवाज उठाउने कुरा अभियन्ता चाइमा आइसाको रगतमा छ। पूर्व राजनीतिक बन्दीकी पुत्री चाइमा सत्ताको अगाडि सत्य बोल्छिन्। चाहे त्यसको मूल्यमा उनले आफ्नो स्वतन्त्रता नै किन गुमाउनु नपरोस्।
जब सन् २०२१ जुलाईमा ट्युनिसियाका राष्ट्रपति काइस सेइदले सङ्कटकालीन अधिकारको आडमा संसद भङ्ग गर्दै प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई बर्खास्त गरे र देशको कार्यकारिणी आफ्नो नियन्त्रणमा लिए । सार्वजनिक रूपमा उनको यस कदमको विरोध गर्ने पहिलोमध्ये चाइमा एक थिइन। उनको सत्ता कब्जा पछि, ट्युनिसियामा मानवअधिकार पहिले भन्दा धेरै कमजोर छ। अभिव्यक्ति स्वतन्त्रतामाथि हमला भइरहेको छ। सैन्य अदालतहरूले सरकारका आलोचकहरूलाई लक्षित गर्छन् र कानुनी प्रणाली स्वतन्त्र छैन ।
चाइमाले अन्य ट्युनिसियाली विपक्षी नेताहरूसँगै ट्युनिसियाको राजनीतिक अवस्थाबारे छलफल गर्न विदेशी कूटनीतिज्ञहरूसँग भेट गरेपछि कथित “षड्यन्त्र” को आरोपमा अनुसन्धानका लागि सन् २०२३ फेब्रुअरी २२ मा उनलाई पक्राउ गरिएको थियो। चार महिनाभन्दा बढी स्वेच्छचारी हिरासतमा राखेपछि उनी १३ जुलाईमा रिहा भएकी थिइन्, तर कानुनी मुद्दा चलिरहेको छ र अधिकारीहरूले उनलाई विदेश यात्रा र “सार्वजनिक स्थानहरूमा देखा पर्न” प्रतिबन्ध लगाएका छन्। एउटा रेडियो कार्यक्रममा अधिकारीहरूको आलोचना गरेको आरोपमा पनि चाइमामाथि एक सैन्य अदालत(जुन स्वतन्त्र छैन) ले अनुसन्धान गरिरहेको छ। उनले दशकौं जेलमा बस्नु पर्नेछ। तर चाइमा हार मान्नेवाला छैनन्। न्यायाधीशको कार्यालयमा चाइमाले भनिन्: “के यही हो ट्युनिसिया? के हामीले, तपाईंले र मैले पढेको ट्युनिसिया यही हो? के हामीले कल्पना गरेको ट्युनिसिया यही हो?” उनलाई जेलमा लगिएको बेला, प्रहरी अधिकारीहरूले घेरिएकी चाइमा मुस्कुराइन, मुट्ठी उठाइन् र राष्ट्रिय गान गाइन्।

Facing years in prison for speaking out

When Tunisian president Kais Saied suspended parliament, dismissed the prime minister and took executive control of the country in July 2021 citing emergency powers, Chaima was one of the first to publicly oppose him. Since his power grab, human rights in Tunisia are more fragile than ever. Freedom of expression is under attack. Military courts target critics of the government, and the legal system lacks independence.
After meeting foreign diplomats along with other Tunisian opposition figures to discuss the political situation in Tunisia, Chaima was arrested on 22 February 2023 as part of an investigation for alleged “conspiracy”. She was released on 13 July after more than four months of arbitrary detention, but the legal case is ongoing and the authorities have banned her from travelling abroad and “appearing in public spaces”. A military court, which lacks independence, is also investigating Chaima for criticizing the authorities on a radio show. She faces decades in prison.
But Chaima will not give up. In the judge ’s office Chaima exclaimed: “Is this Tunisia? Is this is the Tunisia where we studied, you and me? Is this the Tunisia we dreamed of?” As she was taken to prison, surrounded by police officers , Chaima smiled, raised her fist and sang the national anthem.
