साउदी अरेबियाका अधिकारीहरूले उनीहरूको बुझाइमा आलोचनात्मक लाग्ने कुनै पनि विषयमा शून्य सहनशीलताको रणनीति अपनाएका छन्। अभिव्यक्ति स्वतन्त्रताको अभ्यास गरेकै कारण साउदी अरेबियामा मानिसलाई एम्नेस्टी इन्टरनेसनलले अभिलेख गरेको अहिलेसम्मकै मध्येको सबैभन्दा कठोर सजाय जस्तै -दशकौं लामो अवधिको कैद, यात्रामा प्रतिबन्ध र मृत्युदण्ड लगायतका सजायहरू सुनाइएको छ।  

गत साल १० वर्षे जेल सजाय पूरा गरे पनि मानवअधिकार रक्षक मोहम्मद अल-काहतानी उनले गरेको मानवअधिकार कार्यका कारण कैद नै रहेका छन्। 

यस दमनले पहिले राजनीतिक अभियानमा संलग्न नभएका मानिसहरूलाई पनि असर परेको छ।

सेवानिवृत्त विद्यालयका शिक्षक मोहम्मद बिन नासेर अल-घामदीलाई जम्मा १० जना मात्रै फलोअर भएको एक्स (पहिले ट्विटर)मा अधिकारीहरूको आलोचना गरेकोमा मृत्युदण्डको सजाय सुनाइएको थियो ।

विद्यावारिधि गरिरहेकी छात्रा र दुई सन्तानकी आमा सलमा अल-शेहाबले महिलाअधिकारको समर्थनमा सामाजिक सञ्जालमा पोस्ट गरेकोमा २७ वर्षको जेल सजाय र त्यसपछि २७ वर्षको यात्रा प्रतिबन्ध भोगिरहेकी छिन्।

रेड क्रिसेन्टमा कार्यरत अब्दुलरहमान अल-सधान सन् २०१८ मार्चदेखि कैद थिए र हाल बलपूर्वक बेपत्ता पारिएका छन्। उनलाई उनको व्यंग्यात्मक ट्वीटहरूका लागि २० वर्षको जेल सजाय र त्यसपछि २० वर्षको यात्रा प्रतिबन्ध लगाइएको थियो।

साउदी अरेबियामा यो स्तरको खुलेआम दमन भइरहेको बेला युवराज मोहम्मद बिन सलमानले अरबौँ डलर खर्च गर्दै देशको छवि चम्काउन र सत्य लुकाउन ऐनामा धुवाँ छर्ने एउटा उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन गरिरहेका छन्।

साउदी अरेबियाले आफ्नो जनसम्पर्क औजारमा थप उर्जा हाल्दै जाने क्रममा हामीले  साउदी अधिकारीहरूद्वारा भएको अभिव्यक्ति स्वतन्त्रताको दमनमा पिल्सिएका मानिसहरूको आवाज र कथाहरूलाई विस्तार गर्न आवश्यक छ। हाम्रो मौनतालाई किन्न सकिँदैन। अब केही गरौं र अभिव्यक्ति स्वतन्त्रताको अभ्यास गर्दा गलत रूपमा हिरासतमा पारिएका सबैलाई रिहा गर्न साउदी अरेबियाका अधिकारीहरूलाई आह्वान गरौँ।

Free Saudi Arabia’s voices of change  

Saudi Arabia’s authorities are intensifying their campaign to silence all critical voices in the country. A mere social media post calling for human rights reforms or criticizing the authorities can lead to decades in prison, travel bans, or even a death sentence. Meanwhile, the authorities’ expensive PR machine is peddling an image of progress and glamour to the world, flying in famous athletes and entertainers to distract from the country’s atrocious human rights record. Act now and call on Saudi Arabia’s authorities to release all those wrongfully detained for exercising their freedom of expression. 

What is the problem?

Saudi Arabia’s authorities have forcibly disappeared 29-year-old fitness instructor Manahel al-Otaibi since November last year. She has spent more than a year behind bars.  And for what? Tweeting in support of women’s rights. 

Saudi Arabia’s authorities have adopted a zero-tolerance approach to anything they perceive as criticism. People are being sentenced to some of the harshest terms Amnesty International has ever documented in Saudi Arabia for exercising the right to freedom of expression, including decades-long prison terms, travel bans, and the death penalty. 

Human rights defender Mohammed al-Qahtani remains imprisoned for his human rights work, despite finishing his 10-year prison sentence last year. 

The crackdown has also swept up people not previously involved in political activism.  

Retired schoolteacher Mohammad bin Nasser al-Ghamdi was sentenced to death for criticizing the authorities on X, formerly Twitter, to a combined follower count of just 10 people.  

Salma al-Shehab, a PhD student and mother of two, is serving a 27-year prison sentence followed by a 27-year travel ban for social media posts in support of women’s rights. 

Abdulrahman al-Sadhan, a Red Crescent aid worker, is currently forcibly disappeared, and he has been imprisoned since March 2018. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison to be followed by a 20-year travel ban over his satirical tweets.

While this level of flagrant repression is taking place in Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is spending billions of dollars in a remarkable display of smoke and mirrors, to polish the country’s image and hide the truth.

As Saudi Arabia keeps oiling its PR machine, we need to amplify the voices and stories of people swept up in the authorities’ crackdown on the right to freedom of expression. Our silence cannot be bought. Act now and call on Saudi Arabia’s authorities to release all those wrongfully detained for exercising their freedom of expression.
