Members of Constituent Assembly (CA) have expressed their support in favour of accession of the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court (ICC). In a program that organized by Amnesty International (AI) Nepal on 19 March 2010 in Kathmandu, the CA members from ruling parties to main opposition expressed their support to the ICC.
On the occasion CA members including affiliated to the United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) had expressed their solidarity towards to accede to the Rome Statute.
CA members Binod Pahadi and pralhad Lamichhane of Maoist said that if government ready to bring proposal about Rome statute, their party would be ready to support it. On the occasion Chief whip of Nepali congress Laxman Ghimire said that Nepal should accede to the Rome Statute to end the culture of impunity.
Nutan Thapaliya founder of AI Nepal and Purushottam Dahal President of Human Rights and Peace Society also expressed their own views. In July 2006, the Parliament of Nepal, by unanimous decision, had given a directive to the government to access on the Rome Statute but the cabinet still has not decided on it.
In the programme chaired by Hem Kumar Khadka, the Chairperson of AI Nepal, Vice-chairperson Keshab Sigdel and Treasurer Rasmila Bhochhibhoya also put forward their views. At the beginning of the program Rameshwar Nepal, the Director of AI Nepal made a detail presentation on Rome Statutes and the milestones that Nepal has come across so far.
Altogether 46 CA members from different parties including Nepali Congress, UCPN(Maoist), NCP(UML), MPRF Nepal, CPN(United), NPF, UDNF, RPP and CBNUP had participated the program.
