Hundreds of Nepali citizen from different walk of the lives urged Libyan Authority for the release of Libyan Journalist Amara Abdalla al-Khatabi. By signing a petition addressed to Libyan Minister of Justice and Human Rights Salah Marghani, they expressed their solidarity in the support of 67 year-old editor-in-chief of the Libyan daily newspaper Al-Umma.
Amara Abdalla al-Khatabi was arrested on 19 December 2012; a month after his newspaper published a list of 84 judges it said were involved in corruption. He has been charged with defamation. It is also understand that his own lawyer was barred from acting for him on 1 April and that his wife declared an open-ended hunger strike in protest at her husband’s continued detention on 4 April.
Amnesty International (AI) has begun a campaign calling for release of Amara. In that connection, AI Nepal organized an event to collect signatures in the petition on 13 June 2013 in Kathmandu. Over 800 people signed the petition in an hour long program expressing solidarity to Amara and calling for an immediate and unconditional release.
