Activists Demanded Protection of Migrants

International Migrants Day

Activists from human rights and trade union movement demanded protection of Nepali migrant workers on the occasion of International Migrants Day. Amnesty International Nepal, CLASS Nepal and UNI Nepal jointly organized a demonstration and signature collection program marking the International Day on 18 December 2014 (3 Paush 2071) in Kathmandu to make that call. There was participation of dozens of activists affiliated to the organization mentioned above. The organizers also collected signatures calling political parties to adopt the policy to protect Nepali migrants from exploitation, forced labour and human trafficking.

International Migrants Day is an international day observed on December 18 as International Migrants Day appointed by the General Assembly of United Nations on December 4, 2000 taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world. On December 18, 1990, the General Assembly adopted the international convention on the protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families

An hour long program was addressed by Surya Bahadur Adhikari, Chairperson of Amnesty International Nepal; Tilak Khadka, General Secretary of CLASS Nepal; Lekhnath Pokharel, Deputy General Secretary of UNI Nepal and Rama Pokharel Vice-chairperson of Nepal Trade Union Congress. The program was coordinated by Heramb Dev Bhattarai, the Board member of AI Nepal.
