18 November, 2014

Constituent Assembly Chair Subas Chandra Nembang said he will draw attention of the Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee to ongoing impunity in Nepal during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of Amnesty International Nepal at his office in Singha Durbar.

As part of  Amnesty International Nepal’s newly elected National Executive Committee’s aim to convey concerns about human rights situation to political leaders, a delegation met with the Chairperson on 18 November.

The delegation handed over three different memorandums calling to end impunity, protect rights of the migrant workers and recognise uterine prolapse as a human rights issue. Vice-chairperson of the National Executive Committee Pratap Paudel read out the memorandums and then they were handed over to Chaiperson Nembang by AI Chairperson Surya Bahadur Adhikari.

Accepting the memorandum, Chairperson Nembang said, “I will draw the attention of Ministry of Health regarding the memorandum on women’s sexual and reproductive rights, and Ministry of Labour about protecting rights of Nepali migrant workers.”

The delegation also met Chairperson Mohan Baidya of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) and other senior level leaders on the same day. Accepting the memorandum, Maoist leader Dev Gurung said, “Our party does not oppose Amnesty International’s calls to take actions against those involved in serious human rights abuses. However, we don’t believe that the law brought recently by the government will be able to ensure justice to the victims because the law itself is flawed.”

Former Chairperson Krishna Kandel, Advisor Bishnu Nisthuri, Vice-Chairperson Pratap Paudel, Coordinator of Appeal Committee Kumar Ghimire, Deputy General Secretary Bikram Dhukuchhu, Treasurer Prabin Agrawal, Board Member Heramb Dev Bhattarai and Coordination of Finance Committee Rabin Chandra Koirala  were part of the delegation.

Earlier, a delegation led by Chairperson Surya Bahadur Adhikari had met with the Chairperson of Nepal Communist Party United Marxist Leninist (UML) Khadga Prasad Oli on 13 November 2014 and Chairperson of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Pashupati Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana on 17 November 2014, and handed over similar memorandums.
