Victims Expressed Anger on ‘Delay in Justice’

Families of individuals disappeared during the insurgency expressed their anger at delay in attaining justice and demanded quick delivery of justice, truth and reparation. The families were speaking at various programmes organised to mark the 30th International Day of the Disappeared in Kathmandu. 

Transitional Justice (TJ) Advocacy Group, a loose network of Conflict Victims Group and Civil Society Organisations including Amnesty International jointly organised a three-day campaign. 

Rally in Capital

A rally was held on 30 August which marched through the city center in Kathmandu demanding truth, reparation and justice for cases of human rights abuses committed during the armed conflict. Taking part in the rally , victims and activists raised the question about whereabouts of the disappeared. The rally began from Bhrikutimandap and passed through Putalisadak, Bagbazar and converged into a gathering at Ratnapark.

Vigil

As in the previous years, a candle light vigil was held on the evening of 30 August in memory of the persons disappeared in the conflict at Basantapur in Kathmandu. The programme was coordinated by Amnesty International. 

Various Programs Under 3 Days Campaign

As part of the three-day campaign, a panel discussion on disappearance was organised in the capital. Representatives from various civil society organisations expressed their solidarity with the victims. The programme was coordinated by the National Network of Families of Disappeared and Missing Nepal (NEFAD). 

Similarly, the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) launched a report about ‘Study of wives of the Disappeared’ on 29 August. The National Human Rights commission (NHRC) separately organised a talk programme on 29 August and a panel presentation followed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) documentary and launch of a book on the disappeared on 30 August, 2013.
