Young Activists Empowered More on Human Rights Campaigning Techniques

Young activists across the country empowered more about the campaigning techniques on human rights. The seventh Annual National Youth Mela (Camp) organized by Amnesty International Nepal allowed opportunity to over 7 dozen young activists from across the country to be more empowered about the effective campaigning techniques on major human rights issues.

During the two and half day Mela, various indoor session and out-door activities were held. Under the indoor sessions, the participants were introduced to Amnesty International and briefed on the role of Youth Networks in human rights campaign. Representatives of the Youth Networks also shared their Human Rights Campaigning Experience amongst their peers.

The Mela held in Pokhara of Kaski district from 15 to 17 February 2013 was organized with the objective of imparting participants with information about human rights, Amnesty International and its campaign in the level of practical as well as theoretical knowledge.

A panel discussion was organized on 15 February to inaugurate the Mela. Chief Guest and Veteran human rights activists Krishna Pahadi shed lights on the role of youth in activism in the panel discussion. Other panelists of the inaugural event were Vice-chairperson of Human Rights and Peace Society, Gangadhar Adhikari, youth leader Biswa Prakash Sharma, Film Actress Keki Adhikari and Treasurer of AI Nepal Pratap Poudel. The panel was chaired by AI Nepal’s Chairperson Shambhu Thakur. There was participation of 87 youth representatives from various Youth Networks affiliated to AI Nepal.

Earlier, AI Nepal had organized a press conference on 14 February to inform about the Mela. Likewise, on the 15th of February, an interaction with local human rights organizations regarding the human rights situation of the country was also organized.
