64th Human Rights Day Special
Leaders of the leading political parties expressed their commitment to play vital role to ensure the issue of justice be an integral part of consensus package. Speakers at an interaction program entitled “Nepal: Full Spectrum of Impunity and Human Rights Crisis”, leaders from leading political parties including Nepali Congress, CPN UML, CPN-Maoist and Rastriya Prajatantra Party expressed their commitment to play vital role so that the commitment to take action against perpetrators included in the “consensus package” on which political parties, currently, are trying to reach in an agreement aiming to end the current political deadlock. The speakers also criticized the failure of the Government to respect and protect human rights in the country.
Taking part in the interaction as a key speakers organized by Amnesty International Nepal on 8th December 2012 on the occasion of 64th International Human Rights Day, the speakers expressed their unhappiness to the failure of Government which is fuelling impunity day by day.
Vice- Chair Person of Nepali Congress Ram Chandra Poudel said that the Government should not give amnesty to those involved in serious human rights violations. “But present Maoist led Government is hiding all criminal cases under it’s red flag”, he added. Likewise, Leader of Communist Party of Nepal United Marxist and Leninist (CPN UML) Rajendra Pandey blamed that the Government is promoting the criminal activities as heroism.
Veteran human rights activist Krishna Pahadi said that there is not only the “politicization of crime and criminalization of politics” but also the “trading the criminals”. So, all political forces should practice the political behavior. Founder of AI Nepal Nutan Thapaliya said that all forces in the world should respect the human rights for the well being of people.
Similarly, Vice- Chair Person of Communist Party of Nepal Maoist (CPN-Maoist) CP Gajurel blamed the Leader of UCPN (Maoist) that they are deceiving the people and the country. He blamed the government for serving the southern neighbor rather than respecting the peace process.
In the program, Leader of Rastriya Prajantra Party Parshuram Khapung, Central Committee Member of Nepali Congress Gagan Thapa, Advisor of AI Nepal Krishna Kandel, Former Chairperson of AI Nepal Pradip Pokhrel, Chairperson of Human Rights and Peace Society Hom Kanta Choulagain and Vice-chairperson of AI Nepal Surya Bahadur Adhikari also shed lights on the deepening impunity in Nepal. AI Nepal’s Director Rameshwar Nepal made a presentation regarding AI’s campaign and its position over the impunity in Nepal. The program was chaired by Chairperson of AI Nepal Shambhu Thakur.
