Amnesty International Nepal organized a demonstration and signature collection program urging to Srilankan Government to respect the human rights of political opponents and journalists. The program was hosted by AI Nepal Group-80, Kathmandu and held on 11th of June, 2012.
On the occasion, Treasurer of AI Nepal Surya Bahadur Adhikari, members of Group-80, Kathmandu and Joseph youth network participated. Participants urged to the Government of Sri Lanka to bring into account to those who attacked human rights defenders and journalists. They also urged to end the existing impunity in Sri Lanka. Various information materials also distributed to the participants.
Likewise, AI Nepal organized a demonstration program urging to Srilankan Government to uplift the human rights situation in Srilanka. This program was hosted by AI Nepal Group-11,23,41 and 73, Biratnagar on June 23, 2012 in Biratnagar. Participants demonstrated banner with slogan ‘Locked away Sri Lanka’s security detainees’.
On the occasion, signature also collected on a request letter to the Major General of Department of Prisons in Srilanka for the assistance to gather the information on the number and location of individuals that have been detained under the prevention of Terrorist Act(PTA) of measures under the public security ordinance, including emergency regulations and in particular those detained without charge or trial.
In Srilanka, human rights abuses, rampant during the war, have not ceased following the end of hostilities. Threats and physical attacks continue unabated and the rule of law continues to deteriorate. Now, Sri Lanka is known as the 4th most dangerous place for journalists, ahead of Russia, Colombia and Afghanistan. AI Nepal and various Groups and youth networks affiliated to it are continuously organizing campaign on human rights situation of Sri Lanka as a part of Amnesty international’s global campaign.
In Kathmandu and Biratnagar more than 3000 signatures collected from different walk of life and the signatures sent to Srilankan embassy in Kathmandu by Amnesty International Nepal.
