CAPACITY BUILDING : TRAINING FOR YOUTH MEMBERS

SUNDARBAZAR

AI Nepal Group 27 Lamjung organized a human rights training on 17 March 2007 at Sundarbajar, Lamjung. Acting Chair of AI Nepal Dhruba Kumar Karki and adviser Pradeep Pokhrel were the facilitators of the training. Human Rights situation of Nepal, challenges of human rights protection and efforts of Amnesty International were the issues discussed during the training.

The first phase of the training was aimed for the youth members of AI Nepal. 37 students of Lamjung Campus participated in the session. The second phase of the training was attended by 53 teachers of the area. The trainers shed light on the AI’s policy of independence, transparency and democratic decision making process. In the opening session, joint secretary of the group Ramlal Shrestha welcomed the participants while vice convener presented the group activity report. Group advisers Krishna Bahadur K.C., Baburam bairagi, Shambhu Prasad Tripathi, Campus Chief Dr. Gopal Bahadur K.C., and Rama Poudel spoke on different aspects of human rights. At the final session, duo trainers Dhruba Karki and Pradeep Pokhrel responded to various questions of the participants.

Surkhet

AI Nepal group 69 also organized a one day training programme on AI and human rights on 30 th July 2007. National Executive Member of AI Nepal Keshab Sigdel and Group Convener Bishnu Khanal facilitated the training. 50 members of the local AI youth network participated the training. At the meantime, a meeting of the AI youth members elected Devendra Sejuwal and Radhika Chand as the coordinator and vice-coordinator respectively of the youth network.

Kakarvitta

An orientation program was organized for AI youth network members in Jhapa. Coordinator of Membership Appeal Committee Hem Kumar Khadka and former central member of AI Nepal Maya Prasai facilitated the orientation programme. The orientation included the campaigns of AI, its mandate and the role of AI youth members. Secretary of group 86 Laxman Upreti, Ashok Rai, Raj Kumari Shah, Rama Bhattaria, Chhatra Baniya and Santhosh Adhikari expressed their views during the programme.

Kohalpur

AI Nepal Group 26 Kohalpur organized a training workshop for the members of the local AI youth network. Forty five youth members participated the workshop. Duo trainers chair of AI Nepal Dhurba Kumar Karki and central member Keshab Sigdel conducted the workshop. International human rights instruments, Amnesty International’s campaign and role of youth members were discussed during the workshop. The inaugural session of the workshop was chaired by Group convener Dinesh Sigdel while vice convener Chitra Bahadur Malla conducted the programme. Former convener Arjun Sigdel also expressed his views during the programme.

Itahari

AI Nepal Group 63 organized training on Amnesty International and human rights for members of AI youth network on 29 th May 2007. 52 youth members participated in the training programme.Present during the opening session of the training were coordinator of AI Nepal membership appeal committee Hem Kumar Khadka, former vice General Secretary Raj Narayan Mandal, former NEC member Maya Prasai, president of Nepal Red Cross Society Sunsari Ram Chandra Adhikari, president of Dalit Women Association Sheela Gazmer, president of Itahari Urban Development Committeee Narayan Bahadur Shrestha, president of Janata Secondary School Foolraj Subedi, and Group convener Kabindra Mandal. Hem Khadka, Raj Narayan Mandal and Maya Prasai conducted the training session on second half of the programme.

Dharan

An orientation organized for the medical students studying at BP Koirala Health Science (BPKHS) Foundation in Dharan on 1 st December 2007. More than 50 medical science students who had recently joined AI as youth members participated in the orientation. The orientation was focused on the concept of human rights and campaigns of Amnesty International. Hem Kumar Khadka and Raj Narayan Mandal of AI Nepal facilitated the orientation.
The meeting of the youth members at BPKHS Foundation have also formed a youth network. Madan Krishna Mandal has been elected coordinator of the network. The network will be involved in health related actions of AI apart from regular campaigns of AI Nepal.

Birgunj

An orientation programme was organized for the members of local AI youth network in Birgunj on 22 September 2007.
The orientation was facilitated by Deepak Rajbhandari, Bikram Dhukuchhu and Suresh Upadhaya. Forty youth members of the network took part in the orientation.

Miteri youth network, Kathmandu

AI Miteri Youth Network in Kathmandu organized a training programme on human rights and AI on 22 September 2007. Forty six youth members of the network took part in the training. Board member of AI Nepal Keshab Sigdel facilitated the training. Participants of the National Youth Festival Suyesh Pandit and Sailesh Adhikari shared their experience during the training programme.

Kakrebihar Youth Network, Surkhet

An orientation on human rights and Amnesty International was held for new members of the Surkhet-based Kakrebihar Youth Network on April 26 and 27, 2008. The orientation held for two days for two different groups was inaugurated on April 26 by AI Nepal Central Member, Bikram Dhukuchu. At the inaugural session, AI Nepal Director, Rameswar Nepal, AI Nepal Group-69, Surkhet Advisor, Bhanubhakta Bharati, Group-2 Secretary Indra Aauji, Group-69 Youth Coordinator Pitamber Acharya, Kakrebihar Youth Network member Laxmi Shahi and Anil Shahi and Convenor Devendra Sejuwal expressed their views.

During the orientation, AI Nepal trainers, Rameshwar Nepal and Pitamber Acharya shed light on various aspects of Amnesty International, human rights and humanitarian law.

Birgunj

Marking the 47 th founding day of Amnesty International, the AI Nepal-affiliated group in Birgunj organized a daylong workshop on Amnesty International and human rights on May 29, 2008. Seventy students from the college level took part in the training. AI Nepal National Executive Member Dipak Rajbhandari trained the participants on the Universal Declaration on Human Rights while Group Convenor Suresh Upadhyaya apprised the trainees of Amnesty International and its campaigns. Earlier, at the inaugural session, Chief Guest Dr Deepak Shakya of Birgunj Public College said the young students could play an important role in the protection of human rights. Also expressing their views on the occasion were AI Nepal National Executive Committee member Dipak Rajbhandari, Group Convenor Suresh Upadhyaya and Group Member Rajendra Prasad Koirala.

Bhagawati Youth Network, Inaruwa

An orientation on Amnesty International and human rights was organized for the members of Bhagwati Youth Network under AI Nepal in Inaruwa of Sunsari district on June 10, 2008. Former Deputy Secretary General of AI Nepal, Rajnarayan Mandal apprised the participants on various aspects of human rights and Amnesty International. Forty-eight youth members took part in the orientation.

Progressive Youth Network, Damak

The Progressive Youth Network under AI Nepal in Damak of Jhapa district organized an orientation for its new members on human rights and Amnesty International on June 24, 2008. AI Nepal Trainers Dhruva Kumar Karki, Keshav Sigdel, Rameshwar Nepal and Krishna Bhandari oriented the participants on human rights and humanitarian law, AI and its historical background, AI Nepal, campaigning techniques of AI and letter writing. Acting Chairperson of AI Nepal, Dhruva Kumar Karki gave away certificates to the participants of the orientation.

Butawal Youth Network, Butawal

The Butawal Youth Network under AI Nepal in Butawal of Rupandehi organized on May 17, 2008 an orientation for its new members on human rights and Amnesty International. At the program, AI Nepal trainers Dhruva Kumar Karki and Rameshwar Nepal oriented the participants on human rights and humanitarian law, Amnesty International and its historical background, AI Nepal, campaigning techniques of Amnesty International and other relevants issues. At the conclusion, Acting Chairperson of AI Nepal, Dhruva Kumar Karki gave away certificates to the participants of the program.
