Launch of Amnesty International’s Annual Report

Amnesty International’s Annual Report 2014/15 Launched

25 February, 2015

An event was organised today to launch Amnesty International’s Annual Report 2014/15. The report documents the state of human rights in 160 countries and territories during 2014.

Among others, the report has highlighted how Nepal has seen an increased impunity after the Constituent Assembly passed an act to establish a transitional justice mechanism with the power to recommend amnesties for crimes committed during the country’s civil war (1996-2006), in defiance of a Supreme Court ruling.

The report also touches on how national institutions protecting human rights were weakened by a lack of political will. Discrimination on the basis of gender, caste, class, ethnic origin and religion, remained rife in the country as per the report. Cases of arbitrary detention, torture and extrajudicial executions were also reported throughout the year.

Chairperson of AI Nepal Surya Bahadur Adhikari made the report public amidst a program in Kathmandu while Rameshwar Nepal, Director of Amnesty Nepal, made a presentation about the findings of the report.
